Stray Animal Day is a powerful reminder of the thousands of pets that go missing or are abandoned each year in the UK. It’s not just about raising awareness—it’s about taking real steps to help lost pets find their way back home.
Every year, an estimated 250,000 pets go missing in the UK, with dogs and cats making up the majority. While many are found, countless others end up in council pounds or rescue centres—alone, scared, and at risk. In 2023 alone, over 21,000 dogs were reported as strays, and worryingly, around 10% were put to sleep due to lack of space or owners not coming forward.

Microchip Scanning: The Key to ReunificationIf you find a stray animal, one of the first and most crucial steps is to have it scanned for a microchip. You can ask a vets practice or a microchip angel. Many reunions happen this way—but only if the chip details are up to date. Far too often, the phone number is disconnected, or invalid or the address is old, leaving the pet with no clear path home. Keeping your contact info current on the microchip database is essential—it could mean the difference between reunion and rescue. |

Legal Obligations and Community Outreach for DogsFor dogs, contacting your local dog warden is not just helpful—it’s a legal requirement. You should also check and post on local community groups on Facebook, Nextdoor, and Reddit, as well as dedicated lost and found platforms like DogLost UK and PawBoost, for example. These sites allow you to create, download or print free posters, making it easier to spread the word quickly and effectively. |

Expanding the Search: Vets and Local RescuesContacting nearby vets is also important—they can scan for a chip and may recognise the animal. Don’t forget to check our page for the list of all local rescues to notify local places and give the pet the best chance of finding help. |

Stray pets taken to the pound have usually only seven days to be claimed. After that, if a rescue space isn’t found, they may be put to sleep. With UK rescues overwhelmed, and the XL Bully breed ban putting added strain on resources, the situation has become even more urgent. Owners of exempted dogs must ensure their paperwork, vaccinations, and microchip info are 100% up to date to avoid heartbreaking outcomes.
after that, they may be put to sleep.
On Stray Animal Day, let’s do more than share posts. Let’s be part of the solution. A small action—checking a chip, making a call, posting online—could save a life. Please help us spread the message far and wide!
