What do you know about Badgers in Northamptonshire?

We could of course send you to a Wikipedia page that will provide plenty of useful information around Badgers. For those interested, please click here

We will however stay a little closer to home and talk about ‘Our Badgers’ and what to do in case you find one, even more, if you find an injured or young badger alone or during the daytime.

Badgers are middle size mammals, usually brown-ish colour with darker markings at the top of their body, head, and paws. They are omnivores (eat meat, vegetables, fruit and vegetables, including wild fruit and other plants) and are nocturnal. They are usually afraid of people and live a life far from households, although if you were to feed them, they will come and visit gardens often.

If you were to find a badger, do you know what you should do?

  • If you do not how to handle badgers, we would suggest following the recommendation belove.
  • If you find a youngster, please be careful, as parents are likely to be near and may want to defend the cub.
  • If you do not see adult badgers for several hours, or the one(s) you find is/are badly injured or weak, then please call the Northamptonshire Badgers Group, or Animals in Need / NANNA rescues, or alternatively RSPCA (they may be able to temporarily take the animal and keep in the wildlife section before passing on to the right people) or  contact us  and we will try to help and call the professionals on your behalf.
Quote from Northamptonshire Badgers Group website:

RESCUES

If you find a severely wounded, badly injured, or obviously sick badger, please take extreme care and get expert help as soon as possible.
A list of our trained rescuers can be found below*.

Always remember, that frightened animals bite in self-defence, often with surprising speed and little or no warning and badgers have immensely powerful jaws, which can inflict deep wounds.

Therefore please leave the badger alone and call us immediately for advice.

Trained wildlife rehabilitators, RSPCA inspectorate and experienced members of badger groups have the skill and know how to approach, handle and make badgers safe in secure carrying cages. They have specialist equipment for rescues, so please wait until they arrive at the site

Please note!

Please NEVER hand feed badgers in the wild. Seeing them coming close and during daylight is usually bad sign.
